Access : Critical weight loss is a major prognostic indicator for disease-specific survival in patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiotherapy : British Journal of Cancer

Weight loss both before and during radiotherapy are important prognostic indicators for 5-year DSS in HNC patients. Randomised studies into the prognostic effect of nutritional intervention are needed.

Access : Radiation-induced bowel injury: the impact of radiotherapy on survivorship after treatment for gynaecological cancers : British Journal of Cancer

Women with cervical cancer are younger and appear to suffer more severe symptoms of late bowel toxicity, whereas women treated for endometrial cancer suffer milder more chronic disease. The impact of radiation-induced bowel injury and the effect on cancer survivorship warrants further research into investigation of predictors of severe late toxicity.

Hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid dysfunction induced by intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for adult patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma – Springer

At the era of IMRT, a high rate of endocrine deficiency was still seen. Hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid dysfunction is more common in NPC patients. Regular monitoring is needed.

Development and initial evaluation of electronic Children’s International Mucositis Evaluation Scale (eChIMES) for children with cancer – Online First – Springer

We found that eChIMES was easy to use, understandable, and suitable for monitoring mucositis among children with cancer. Incorporation into clinical trials may improve the ability to compare and evaluate interventions for mucositis.

Risk factors for osteoradionecrosis in elderly patients with oral and pharyngeal cancer – Online First – Springer

The incidence of ORN continues to increase steadily up to 10 years from the time of diagnosis. Patients with oral cavity primaries are at highest risk in this population. Future research should be directed toward identifying factors that can reduce the incidence of ORN.

Management of intractable epistaxis in patients who received radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma – Springer

Endovascular embolization was successful in seven radiation carotid blowout syndromes with cessation of hemorrhage. One patient underwent external carotid artery ligation and one patient recovered without treatment. The clinical follow-up was 3 months. Therapeutic endovascular embolization of intractable epistaxis is both efficient and safe. It should be considered as the primary treatment modality in intractable epistaxis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Samarium-153-ethylene diamine tetramethylene phosphonate, a beta-emitt

This review focuses on samarium-153, first defining its radiobiologic and pharmacokinetic properties before describing many clinical trials that support its use as a safe and effective tool in the palliation of patients with bone metastases.

Affordability of cancer treatment for aging cancer patients in Singapore: an analysis of health, lifestyle, and financial burden – Online First – Springer

Although aging cancer patients feel that the financial schemes in Singapore have helped them tremendously, the general perception is that they require further help to offset their out-of-pocket expenses. This is especially true for users of targeted therapies and those who have a poorer health status.
