Risk factors identified at diagnosis help predict outcomes for children with rare heart condition

A long-term study of children with a complex heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) found that the risk of death or need for immediate listing for heart transplantation was greatest for those who developed this disease as infants with congestive heart failure and for children who also had selective inborn errors of metabolism, a group of rare genetic disorders in which one or more of the body’s key metabolic processes are disrupted.

Do pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO) fellows receive communication training? – File – 2013 – Pediatric Blood & Cancer – Wiley Online Library

There is limited communication training in PHO fellowships despite ACGME requirements and fellows’ interest in this training. Didactic learning remains the most frequently described training method, yet educational theory identifies the limitation of didactic lectures alone. Communication training employing novel teaching methods and emphasizing communication challenges identified by fellows should be developed and evaluated.

Development and initial evaluation of electronic Children’s International Mucositis Evaluation Scale (eChIMES) for children with cancer – Online First – Springer

We found that eChIMES was easy to use, understandable, and suitable for monitoring mucositis among children with cancer. Incorporation into clinical trials may improve the ability to compare and evaluate interventions for mucositis.
