“Using a simple assessment tool, we were able to objectively identify the frail at-risk patients, which allowed us to implement a preoperative palliative care strategy to confirm goals of care and alert our teams –OR, anesthesia, ICU — of a high-risk patient needing attention for potential rescue therapy,” Dr. Jason M. Johanning from the Nebraska Western Iowa Veterans Affairs Medical Center told Reuters Health by email.
